Welcome John Dally and Scott Robertson back to WPA events this Saturday.

John Dally - master of many bagpipes

John Dally - master of many bagpipes

John Dally is one of the founding members of Washington Pipers’ Association, if not the reason we began at all.  A master of bagpipes from many regions with a wealth of historical and musical knowledge, John has performed regularly around Western Washington and beyond since the age of 14.  Contact information for John is available here>>

Scott Robertson at WPA 2009

Scott Robertson at WPA 2009

Scott Robertson is enthusiastic about his return to adjudicate at WPA.  Scott was the only drumming judge at the BC Pipers Association mini-gathering last weekend (a task that usually requires two adjudicators), but is making the trip down to join us again, and we greatly appreciate it.  Scott is currently instructing grade 4 and 5 side drummers of the RMM Pipe Band. He has instructed and led pipe band drum corps including organizing and training bands for recording and competing in North America and Britain. Drum Corps taught include: Triumph Street Pipe Band, Vancouver Ladies Pipe Band (1980 World Champions),Delta Police Pipe Band, Seaforth Highlanders. Drum Corps that he has played with include TSPB (1979 World Champions) 1974 – 1991 and the  Abbotsford Police Pipe Band.  Scott is an “A” level (all grades) certified side, drum corps, tenor and ensemble judge with the BC Pipers Association. He frequently judges at highland games in Western Canada and the Pacific Northwest.  For more info about Scott, please visit www.scottondrums.com and www.scottondrums-school.com

Just a brief mention; five pipers and drummers from Washington State are competing at http://winterstorm.net in Kansas City this weekend.  Good luck Jori Chisolm, Brian McKenzie, Will Nichols, Graham Young, and Steven Wheeler!

The last event of the season is upon us.  Thanks to our award winning and “BCPA certified” adjudicators for coming down from British Columbia this weekend!   I will post more about these adjudicators with the results, but David Bowman was the runner up in the 2009 BCPA Drumming Knockout events, an award winning solo drummer who plays with the 2008 World Pipe Band Champion and World Drum Corps champions, Simon Fraser University Pipe Band.   Hal Senyk will be judging piping.  Hal is also a certified adjudicator, award winning soloist, Pipe Major and volunteer Director with BC Pipers’ Association.

Please review the Aggregate scores so far and make sure we’re not missing any events and double check we’ve got the events correct.  6 points were awarded to first, 5 to 2nd and so on down to 1 point for 6th place finishes. Link:  2009 WPA Aggregate Standings, April 2009.  A reminder for aggregate awards; attendance at 4 of 5 WPA events is a requirement to be eligible for the award.   Aggregate plaques are similar to last years’ awards.

The WPA Board met Wednesday and clarified the Scholarship process, as well as took steps to ensure that alternates will be more likely to get the benefit of a scholarship award by adding a deadline on acceptance of the award for the first – drawn recipient.

Scholarship drawings are available to:

  • Competitors who checked the “Scholarship box” on the registration form
  • Competitors who pre-registered (or registered this year by the first event of the season)
  • Competitors who competed at 4 of 5 monthly events.
  • Competitors who did NOT receive a scholarship award from WPA during the 2008 season.

Scholarship drawings will be drawn first for the primary, then for the alternate for that award.  FOUR $250.00 Scholarships will be drawn.   Scholarship recipients must notify WPA at info@washingtonpipers.org of their intended use of the scholarship by the end of June, 2009.  Scholarship awards must be used within one year (ie, payment to the Scottish piping or drumming school must be requested to be sent by May 3, 2010).  Scholarship payment is sent directly to the Scottish Piping or Drumming school at the request of the recipient, once they have registered or informed the school of intent to register.

See you Saturday!

Thanks to Brian McKenzie, local piper and instructor who is among the top professional pipers in the world in solo competitions, recently winning 3rd in 2008 and 2nd in the 2007 Midwest Highland Arts Fund & MWPBA US Silver Medal Piobaireachd Competition at Winter Storm,  Thanks also to Steve Roy, multi-talented percussionist, instructor and drumming director for judging Snare and Tenor drumming Saturday.

Our new location was very well received, and we look forward to working through the kinks and continuing to enhance the experience at the Grace Fellowship Church in Lynnwood, WA.  We look forward to your feedback, please let us know if you have any concerns, comments, or suggestions.

Congratulations to the Northwest Junior Pipe Band and the Keith Highlanders Grade 4 pipe band for their great showings on their recent Scotland trips.  Both bands were the top bands from the United States in their competition grade.  The Keith Highlanders was the top Grade 4B band from the United States at the World Championships, and the Northwest Junior Pipe Band was the top US youth pipe band from either Novice or Juvenile.

The Keith Highlanders competed at the Perth Highland Games, placing 5th in a field of 24 bands.  They followed this strong performance with a first place in the World Pipe Band Championships qualifier for Grade 4B, and a third place finish in the final.  Results from the RSPBA are available here>>.

The Keith Highlanders in the competition arena

The Northwest Junior Pipe Band competed at North Berwick Highland Games, Perth Highland Games, Crieff Highland Gathering and The World Pipe Band Championships.  The band placed 5th in Juvenile and 7th in Novice Juvenile at North Berwick, First of 24 bands in Grade 4 at Perth, first of 11 Grade 4 bands at Crieff, third in the World Championships qualifier, and fifth in the world at the World Pipe Band Championships.  Results for NWJPB from the RSPBA are available here>>.  A growing Blog about their Scotland trip is available here>>.

NWJPB celebrates their top 6 placing at the World Championships

Combine these incredible top results for Washington Pipe Bands with the other results from our region from White Spot Pipe Band from BC, who placed sixth in Juvenile at the World Championships, and Simon Fraser University Pipe Band from BC, who won the title of World Champion AND best drum corps, the Northwest and BC are truly among the most talented areas of the world for the top talent in bagpipe bands.

Aggregate awards were handed out at end of the May 3rd gathering.  To receive the award, competitors must not have won in the same grade previously, and must have competed in 4 of 5 events.  Points were awarded in reverse order for the top 6 positions at each event.  1st place: 6 points, 2nd place: 5 points, 3rd place: 4 points, etc.

Scholarship Awards:

There was a bit of confusion about the scholarship process.  To be eligible for an award, competitors had to compete in 4 of 5 events, register before the end of December 2007, and check the box indicating they wished to be included in the Scholarship drawing.  A couple of members were not drawn because their memberships were received at the first event, but one member was received in time but was inadvertently left off the list.  These have been added as second alternates.  The rule for scholarship awards is unlikely to change for next year, because it’s very important to the volunteers of WPA that the membership forms be received early enough to get them processed, especially since Angie Maier has indicated this was her last year volunteering as registrar after many many years of service (nearly 10, we think).  We were a little more flexible about the deadline this year, extending it to the end of December because we were late getting the newsletter and information posted, but for the 2009 season, the deadline will move back to December 15th, 2008.  The rules are posted in the newsletter

WPA increased the number of scholarships our members and donors help fund to 5 from 4 last year, and the amount per award to 300.00.  To claim a scholarship award for the two awards donated by Mastery of Scottish Arts and Coeur D’Alene School of Piping and Drumming, please contact us to let us know you plan to use it and we will notify the organization, then you will be able to register with them.  Remember that these awards are for tuition only, the room and board is your responsibility.

WPA $300.00 award winners should register with the piping or drumming school of your choice, get confirmation email from them if possible and then forward the confirmation email to our general contact address info [at] washingtonpipers.org (replacing [at] with @).  Our treasurer Diane Axworthy will then arrange payment with the school you have chosen.  Congratulations!

Sorry for the delays getting these posted.  We had a last minute challenge with scheduling judges, but ended up with two judges who needed to leave early, so we scheduled simultaneous competitions.  Thanks to Patrick Downing and Colin Gemmell for jumping in at the last minute to make the day a success.  Thanks to Stephen Farrell for joining us again to finish the season’s drumming competitions.

Northwest Junior Pipe Band Grade 4 performed in the morning, and the Bucketmen performed in the afternoon to rave reviews.  Here’s a sample video from a recent bucketmen recording session.  We’ll try to get video from the WPA event posted soon.

We’re missing a photo card, not sure if it’s a permanent loss, but we hope our Grade 3 pipers can forgive us for misplacing them, your pictures were left off this posting.  Hopefully it will turn up and we’ll add them later.  Visit the photo album to see the everyone else’s pictures though.

Piping and Drumming Rocks!

We’re still working on the April photos, but March Pictures have been posted in our photo gallery. Look forward to the current aggregate results before the end of the weekend, too.

Washington Scottish Pipe Band will perform at this Saturday’s Washington Pipers’ Association mini-gathering around 11:00 am, after Adult piping begins. The Washington Scottish Pipe Band is a Grade III band based in Seattle dedicated to the promotion of Scottish culture through performance and education. Washington Scottish traces their roots back to the late 19th century, making them one of the oldest pipe bands in the Pacific Northwest.

Washington Scottish at Whidbey Island Highland Games

Thanks to volunteer and WPA Board Member Jonathan Farrell for inviting top Northwest pipers and drummers to adjudicate for us again this weekend.

Drummer Cam ReidJudging drumming Saturday is Cameron Reid.  Cameron started drumming at age 10 with the Comox Valley Pipe Band Society. He joined the Robert Malcolm Memorial Pipe Band in 2001 and won the Juvenile World Championships in 2003. Cameron placed 3rd at the 2004 World Solo Drumming Championships in the Juvenile Class, won the grade 2 World Pipe Band Championships in 2006 with RMM, and last year won the grade 2 North American Championships in 2007 with Triumph Street Pipe Band. Dowco Triumph Street Pipe Band was promoted to Grade 1 this year and is one of the first bands in North America to secure new “band naming” sponsorship in recent years.  Since announcing the new band, they rapidly received sponsorship from three major businesses.  For more on this story, see this article on pipes|drums  from December 2007.  There are only 39 Grade 1 pipe bands in the world, and two of them are based in the Northwest.

WPA drummers benefit from detailed feedback and suggestions about their performances from many of the top drummers in the Northwest and around the world.  Thanks Cam for joining us this weekend!

Piper Alex GallowayCameron is joined by band mate Alex Galloway. Alex grew up in Vancouver, BC and started piping in 1986 with instruction from Jimmy Wilson and Jack Lee. After moving up through the amateur grades with competitive success he was invited to compete at the Nicol Brown amateur invitational in Albany, New York. Alex moved into the open class in 2001 and continues to compete in the local circuit. Alex has played with the White Spot Pipe Band, Maple Ridge Legion, Robert Malcolm Memorial (gr 2) and now with Dowco Triumph Street Pipe Band. He has won both the World and North American championships in the grade 2 band level. Alex continues to teach piping and serves on the BCPA board of directors.
