Usually, we try to post about our adjudicators before the event. If we miss it, we add their info to the results post. However, the background of this week’s adjudicators are long and interesting enough, we’ve given them a post of their own. Results to come.

We were thrilled to welcome two members of Dowco Triumph Street Pipe Band to our event on Saturday, Drum Sergeant Andre Tessier, and Piper Gordon MacRae.

Andre Tessier, Dowco Triumph Street Pipe Band Drum Sargeant

Andre Tessier was born in Montreal, Quebec, Canada. An “A” level adjudicator for snare, tenor, band drumming, and band ensemble with the British Columbia Pipers’ Association, Andre has played with Toronto & District, the 78th Fraser Highlanders, Simon Fraser University, Robert Malcolm Memorial Grade 2, and with Dowco Triumph Street Pipe Band beginning in 2007, he’s had a long history of success.

While Pipe Sergeant with DTSPB, the band most recently won 6th in the Medley competition at the 2011 World Pipe Band Championships, placing 9th overall, and has passed the qualifier round at every World Championships since their first trip in 2008. The band won the 2007 Grade 2 North American Championships, Andre was the Drum Sergeant with the 2006 Grade 2 World Champions with RMM. While with Simon Fraser University, Andre won the 2002 Grade 1 North American Champions, the 2001 Grade 1 World Championships, the 2001 Grade 1 Australian Championships, the 1999 Grade 1 World Drum Corps Champions and the Grade 1 World Championships, and the 1996 Grade 1 World Championships. While with the 78th Fraser Highlanders, Andre won the 1994 and 1995 North American Championships. In his solo career, Andre was the 2007 Glengarry Highland Games (Maxville) Pro Drummer of the Day and 3-time BCPA Drumming Knockout Champion, and as an adjudicator, has been a very important fixture at many band and solo contests for years.

Gordon MacRae, World Pipe Band Championships 2011

Gordon MacRae’s parents emigrated from Scotland to Canada in 1948, after emigrating, Gordon’s father began to learn the bagpipes. He never played competitively but had a great sense of the music. He had sung in the Gaelic mods as a boy. He played a bit of fiddle and accordion as well.

Gordon began playing around 10 years of age. His pipe band experience was with a local legion band from Sand hill Ontario. He quickly found he was not satisfied playing in parades and at local fairgrounds and sought something more challenging, beginning playing competitively in the early 70′s in southern Ontario, receiving his first serious instruction was from Gail Brown (first female piper ever to play in the World’s with the winning Grade 1 band, with Shotts & Dykehead Caldonia Pipe Band in 1973). Gordon played in Gail’s first “kids” band, the Oakville Optimists, which moved up quickly through the ranks within a few years before she left to play with Shotts and Dykehead.

Gordon had opportunity to gain instruction from some legendary pipers at various piping schools around Ontario, including P/M Reay Mackay, P/M John Wilson, Capt. John MacLellan, P/M John D. Burgess, Jimmy McIntosh, Ed Neigh, and Bill Livingston. P/M John Wilson provided instruction for one year but sadly passed away in 1979.

Around 1981, Gordon joined the GM pipe band under Bill Livingston. The band later became the 78’Th Fraser Highlanders. Over the next decade the band produced a number of recordings (vinyl) and started what became the annual pilgrimage to the world pipe band championships. Bill also had some passion for stage performances and the band performed several concerts at home and abroad, the most notable of which were Toronto’s Massey Hall and the “Live in Ireland” concert, in Ballymena, Ireland, from which a “double” album was produced. Gordon left the 78’th in 91 but would rejoin them for the 2001, and 2002 seasons where they placed sixth and fifth respectively at the worlds. Though the 90’s Gordon played with Metro Police and Peel Police under other ex 78’th friends Jake Watson and Michael Grey.

In 2002 Gordon moved to B.C., for work, and quickly found his way into the impressive West coast piping scene. Gordon played for a few years with RMM2, and has thoroughly enjoyed playing with the relatively young group at Dowco Triumph Street Pipe Band, as it continues its journey to the top of the pipe band world.
