Scholarship Awards:

There was a bit of confusion about the scholarship process.  To be eligible for an award, competitors had to compete in 4 of 5 events, register before the end of December 2007, and check the box indicating they wished to be included in the Scholarship drawing.  A couple of members were not drawn because their memberships were received at the first event, but one member was received in time but was inadvertently left off the list.  These have been added as second alternates.  The rule for scholarship awards is unlikely to change for next year, because it’s very important to the volunteers of WPA that the membership forms be received early enough to get them processed, especially since Angie Maier has indicated this was her last year volunteering as registrar after many many years of service (nearly 10, we think).  We were a little more flexible about the deadline this year, extending it to the end of December because we were late getting the newsletter and information posted, but for the 2009 season, the deadline will move back to December 15th, 2008.  The rules are posted in the newsletter

WPA increased the number of scholarships our members and donors help fund to 5 from 4 last year, and the amount per award to 300.00.  To claim a scholarship award for the two awards donated by Mastery of Scottish Arts and Coeur D’Alene School of Piping and Drumming, please contact us to let us know you plan to use it and we will notify the organization, then you will be able to register with them.  Remember that these awards are for tuition only, the room and board is your responsibility.

WPA $300.00 award winners should register with the piping or drumming school of your choice, get confirmation email from them if possible and then forward the confirmation email to our general contact address info [at] washingtonpipers.org (replacing [at] with @).  Our treasurer Diane Axworthy will then arrange payment with the school you have chosen.  Congratulations!

Sorry for the delays getting these posted.  We had a last minute challenge with scheduling judges, but ended up with two judges who needed to leave early, so we scheduled simultaneous competitions.  Thanks to Patrick Downing and Colin Gemmell for jumping in at the last minute to make the day a success.  Thanks to Stephen Farrell for joining us again to finish the season’s drumming competitions.

Northwest Junior Pipe Band Grade 4 performed in the morning, and the Bucketmen performed in the afternoon to rave reviews.  Here’s a sample video from a recent bucketmen recording session.  We’ll try to get video from the WPA event posted soon.

Kenmore & District Pipe BandThanks again to our judges Will Nichols and Stephen Farrell for ensuring a successful competition today.  It was great to see Elliott Bay Pipe Band and Kenmore and District Pipe Bands performing for us, donating their time to support WPA audiences and providing us with some great music in the morning and afternoon.Elliott Bay Pipe Band

In addition, enough cannot be said about our many volunteers who ensure all the pieces are in place.  Angie Maier; our membership database board member has been taking on preparing the registration forms and competitor sheets in advance for everyone that needs them.  Without this information, our events would fall apart.  Johnathan Farrell has been bringing in the top talent from our area and beyond to judge our competitions every month.  Thanks to Diane Axworthy for helping ensure financial stability and all payments are made on time.  Thanks to Doug Stone and Joe Alger today for Stewarding (and Doug, thanks for introducing drummers as well!) and thanks to Alex MacLeod and Steve Wheeler for stewarding at prior events this year.  Thank you so much Rochelle Wheeler and Jody Horn for doing Registration today.  Rochelle has led our registration this year has figured out the role quickly!  Thanks also to Sadrina Dorn for helping with registration at our first two events.  Thanks to Weatherly Schiele for all the amazing photos (photos from this event coming soon) and helping plan the season at our meetings before the season started.  Kudos to Michelle Makinson for volunteering to fill our open Secretary position on the Board of Directors.  The huge outpouring of support…people willing to roll up their sleeves and make our events continue to thrive…is what will keep our organization a fixture in our community.

Thanks also to John for leading an impromptu workshop for drummers to give a little more understanding of what some drumming comments mean, and to explain that the judges are there to help you learn how to win, not just to point out your mistakes. :)

Reminder: WPA does not follow BCPA rules for placings at these events.  We believe it’s valuable for competitors to get a clear understanding of their placing, so even when there are less than 10 competitors, you will see placings all the way out to 6, except in the case of “break down”.

Keep this in mind as you go to BCPA sanctioned games and competitions, the general rules for placings ba2-9-08-wpa-130.jpg2-9-08-wpa-130.jpgsed on the number of competitors are listed here>>

40 Competitors pre-registered for competition, and while some scratched, many showed up and registered today!  Thanks to all the volunteers, competitors and audience members who contributed to a very smooth and efficient event today.   We tried running side drumming after Grade 5 piping, simultaneously with adult and Grade 4 piping.  While we are unsure we can do this again due to needing an additional room; many expressed appreciation for finishing the event in 3.5 hours.  We’ll work with the church over the next couple of weeks to see if we can come up with another room for next month.

Thanks very much to John Moore, Drumming and Keith Paton, Piping for stepping in with late notice and helping ensure we held the event today!

You may notice a new format for results.  We’ve begun adding the Pipe Band the member reports to us on their sign up sheet.  The current information in this list is from memory, but we’ll update it over the next several days.  If you told us what pipe band you belong to, we’ll add them and a link with your solo competition results.  This is beneficial for bands in terms of promoting their web sites popularity in search engines as well as adding some additional incentive to compete in solo competitions for some band members.

One final note about results.  WPA does not follow BCPA rules for placings at these events.  We believe it’s valuable for competitors to get a clear understanding of their placing, so even when there are less than 10 competitors, you will see placings all the way out to 6, except in the case of “break down”.

Keep this in mind as you go to BCPA sanctioned games and competitions, the general rules for placings based on the number of competitors are listed here>> and are:

3 competitors - two (2) prizes
4 to 10 competitors - three (3) prizes
